Vaginaplasty
As part of our vaginal rejuvenation services, Islip OB-GYN offers a surgical procedure known as vaginaplasty that is designed to help reduce excessive width in a woman's vaginal canal. While this is typically a cosmetic issue that can occur following natural childbirth, some women report complaints of diminished sensation or friction during intercourse causing them to have difficulty or being unable to achieve an orgasm.
If you are experiencing these symptoms, you may be an ideal candidate for vaginal reconstructive surgery or vaginaplasty. With offices located in Brentwood and Islip, NY, when you schedule a consultation at Islip OB-GYN, our physicians can discuss your vaginal rejuvenation needs and determine if this procedure is right for you.
Vaginaplasty enhances the tautness and tightness of the vaginal walls by decreasing the vaginal diameter. The procedure can take anywhere from 1-3 hours to complete and is designed to enhance friction during intercourse. During the procedure, in order to provide proper vaginal tightening, not only is the vaginal tissue dissected and trimmed, but the underlying supporting structures and muscles are as well. The degree of tightness will depend on your wishes or situation.
Vaginaplasty can also be used to address several medical conditions that can cause issues with incontinence, discomfort, or lack of sensation during intercourse. At Islip OB-GYN, we offer several different surgical vaginal reconstruction techniques to address your concerns based on the condition you may have. A few examples of conditions that may require vaginal reconstructive surgery include the following:
Rectoceles
This happens when the rectum bulges into or out of the vagina and typically occurs as a result of injuries during childbirth. With a weakened or bulging rectum, bowel movements are more difficult. The vagina can also feel larger, reducing sensation during intercourse.
Cystoceles
This occurs when the bladder falls, descends from its usual position. With cystocele it is sometimes difficult to completely empty the bladder and this can be associated with bladder infections. This can also cause the bladder to overfill and allow small amounts of urine to leak (common when walking or coughing). Cystoceles can also occur due to trauma from childbirth.
Urethroceles
Occurs in conjunction with a cystocele as these can both cause involuntary loss of urine (especially when there is increased pressure in the abdomen from walking, jumping, coughing, sneezing, laughing or sudden movements).
Enteroceles
The bulging of the small intestines into the back wall of the vagina.

Labiaplasty
In addition to the above vaginal reconstruction procedures, Islip OB-GYN also offers a procedure known as labiaplasty to help women throughout the Long Island, NY area reduce the length and bulk of their inner vaginal lips. This stretched appearance can be the result of childbirth or can occur naturally and is typically a cosmetic issue. With labiaplasty, this can be corrected by having our doctors remove the excessive tissue and reconstruct the vaginal lips.
There are a few common surgical techniques used for labiaplasty. The standard method involves trimming in a curved or straight line and suturing the edges together vertically. This is not always preferred as it can give more post-operative scarring and with some sensation potentially being lost. This method does, however, eliminate the dark edges of the labia and give better symmetry.
During the labiaplasty, we’ll use a Z-Plasty technique where specialized flaps are made in the labia and sutured together. The upper and lower edges are then horizontally brought together. This creates a natural look that preserves the original color of the labia and reduces extra tissue. If you are interested in labiaplasty and have further questions about the risks and benefits of this vaginal rejuvenation procedure, reach out to our office today.
Hymen Restoration
Whether the hymen has been injured during sexual intercourse or another trauma, it can usually be restored. Although this may not be possible in some cases, when you visit Islip OB-GYN, we will be happy to give you an evaluation to see if you are able to have this type of vaginal reconstructive surgery performed.
During this procedure, the edges of the torn hymen are trimmed with fine scissors, cautery, or laser devices. Using delicate sutures, the hymen can be reconstructed to its original form. During intercourse, there will be a tear and a small amount of bleeding to the repaired hymen. While there are several reasons why women seek out this procedure, hymen restoration is typically performed for cultural or religious reasons. Regardless of the reasoning, our office is available to help women throughout Brentwood, Islip, Smithtown, Brookhaven, Huntington, NY, and the nearby communities across the Long Island area restore the appearance of their hymen.
